What is it?
High pressure decorative laminate (HPDL) is made by saturating sheets of decorative and core paper with resins, then pressing them under high heat, fusing the layers into a single sheet. Laminate sheets are bonded, using special adhesives, to “substrates” made of plywood, fiberboard or particle board which give the final product its strength and substance. The laminate surface provides resistance from wear and impact.
Popular brands of laminate countertops include Formica®, Arborite®, Nevamar® and Wilsonart®.
Laminate countertops are available in many solid vivid colors and graphic patterns. Colorful graphic laminate countertops are considered an inexpensive way to add color and design to a small bland kitchen or bathroom.
Laminate countertops are a cheaper option compared to natural stone and other countertop choices. They are an affordable choice when a bold colorful look is desired.
There are several advantages to using laminate for your kitchen or bath countertops. These include:

- Easy to clean with soap and water
There are several distinct disadvantages to selecting a laminate countertop. These include:
- Not heat resistant.
- Not as long lasting as other options.
- Non-eco friendly.
- Some designs are noticeably artificial.
